* you write a mail
* your server get a 5xx reject from the destination
* your server generates a NDR and informs you

* you write a mail
* your server get a 200 repsonse
* the destination silent discards

you *really* don't see the difference?

in the first case if the mail is important i retry, chose a different subject or even take the phone and call the other side to find out *why* it was rejected

in the second one i assume the other side just ignored my message
