I've done something like this some time ago with help from this list. It was needed to integrate the YAML [1] form css framework, which shows errors below the input fields.
The plan was to refactor the functionality into a yaml-module, but this was never finnished and I am not sure if it works. But maybe you can get an idea of how this works.
