I've messed around with this problem a bit more. The same exception obviously also happens in Jetty (now that I checked the actual logs), but Jetty somehow manages to not crash and redirect me back to the proper page.
The workaround I came up with was that I just overwrote the class that throws the NPE and added a null check.
