I think I understand the logic/strategy:  "If there's a context value
passed, it is the id of an object to be edited.  If not, we're going to
create a new object". In the above code, just changing @Persist("entity") to @PageActivationContext seems to achieve that....

I guess so. I haven't used @PageActivationContext yet, but it does seem to do the trick.

Yes! This is something that happens often here in this list: someone thinking that something in Tapestry would be more complicated that it really is. :)
