I've checked this code in 5.3.6 and in 5.4-alpha-23 and it's works fine
w/o encoder. There were changes in SelectModel (TAP5-2184) recently.
Tapestry 5.4 is in development and not stable yet. Do you use it for
production?

P.S. You don't need encoder for boolean.
