Johnny, you were correct.

that selstmt connection statement was not being utilized, but sure must have 
had an adverse impact, because I think I've got it working ok now!

I think you should also call

prepstmt.close()

(before closing the connection).

Besides 

selstmt

seems not to be used at all.
