Yup, it says sent. That's all your code can possibly do.

Perhaps gmail's server is refusing to relay the message. Do you need to
use a special server or anything, or perhaps use TLS with authentication?

What about adding a Reply-To address and letting it bounce, so you can
see the reply? Or, does sendmail accept rejects from foreign servers and
deliver them somewhere? I would look for that.
