My department has a tomcat server that has some minors issues. Our main problem is that is that we must restart the server when we change certain applets. On article from http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2003/06/25/tomcat_tips.html has fixes, but it is five years old. Woud these fixes work on an up to date Tomcat5 servers.
