The logs were rotating before i installed JDK and used the jsvc to start tomcat 
service. This is configured under Red Hat Linux 5.4 and Tomcat 5.5.

You really should fix your webapp(s) to not use stdout for logging.  Not using 
a proper logging framework is indicative of sloppy and lazy programming.
