This effort is being coordinated by the CRIE (Computers, Networks and Internet in the Schools) Team, part of DGIDC - Directorate of Innovation and Curriculum Development. This CD has been produced with the cooperation of Sun Microsystems and ANSOL - National Association for the Free Software. It includes education software that can be freely copied, distributed and installed in any Windows computer (The Ministry is also distributing a Linux distribution). The equivalent commercial software would cost more than 300 million Euro to the 1,666,173 K-12 students. This action will contribute to the fight against the digital divide and software piracy in Portugal. This software was selected on the basis of its usefulness and quality, and includes the following: *General applications* * OpenOffice.org - application suite for text, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings.and database, used by millions of people all over the world; * Firefox - Internet navigation program, safe and user-friendly; * Thunderbird - e-mail program very easy to use; * NVU - program to create web pages very quickly; * Inkscape - vectorial drawing program that enables drawing to be created in a very easy and friendly way; * GIMP - very complete photo and image editor, with features similar to the best tools available; *Educational applications* * Freemind e CMApTools - Concept map tools, used to manage knowledge; * Celestia - Software to discover the universe in 3D; * Geogebra -Interactive program used to teach algebra and geometry; * JMOL - molecule viewer for students and teachers of chemistry and biochemicals; * Modellus - enables students and teachers to use mathematics to create and explore models in an interactive way; Complete list available at CRIE's site [2].
