using arch type = amd64 was the cause of the error. I reverted to using i386, and that fixed the problem.

No, haven't seen it, I just tried on my Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit VM, and it builds fine. I'd be interested to see more from the config.log and see if there is anything else there, and also what version(s) of the relevant compiler packages you have installed. -- Leif
