This is somewhat of a hot topic right now, and you are defintely not wrong.
I've been messing with some of the ts_lua stuff and its been great! Its
still relatively new (and I'm not sure who all outside of Yahoo! uses it).
There's some cleanup thats required, but I do think the direction we are
moving is to replace all simple-ish plugins with lua scripts.
