Why not just use the AjaxLazyLoadingPanel? I'm currently using it and my lazy loaded component is updated via AJAX. So, page comes up, ALLP loads the report panel which can take a few seconds. Then I have an AJAX submitted form that updates the filters for the report and refreshes that table using (from memory IndicatingAjaxSubmitButton) so while the report panel itself doesn't get the spinner on the update, the button gets that indicator showing that things are working.
