Firstly view the source code in a Java IDE like IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, NetBeans, etc so you can quickly navigate around the code.
IMHO, the best starting point is to look at the WicketFilter and the WebRequestCycleProcessor to understand how it respectively intercepts and processes Wicket requests. Cheers, James.
