I never found VPS to be cost effective (for my needs). For $100/month or so I have a core 2-duo dedicated box with 4GB RAM/120GB disk and 10mb/s throughput that can host 2-3 virtual machines of my own devising or just be a bare metal server.
Lots more maintenance overhead but the flexibility, speed and consistent cost I found to be worth the extra funds and time vs a VPS.
