I do understand that it is not easy to understand how the whole thing 
work! Even because many features/structures are evolving in real time. 
But what is clear for me is that it is not a good idea to start by 
modifying the default skin. You will frequently, and easily, achieve 
results that you will want to conserve/use in your wiki. And it is by no 
means easy to make an update, which is usually needed to take advantage 
of new features, and keep track of the changes you have done in the 
default of base skins.

Perhaps "Modifying a skin" in 
http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/Skins is a bit 
messy, but it is a perfect starting point.

Please, what have you done and at where are you stuck? I am sure we 
could find the right way of doing the job and modifying this reference 
document if needed.
