I think the problem you describe is a small regression which has been
introduced just before the 1.8 final release. It has been fixed in the
meantime (in revision 18027, related to
http://jira.xwiki.org/jira/browse/XWIKI-3456 ) and will be included in
the 1.8.1 release.
