Client: Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP. Server (running on same physical 
machine as the client): XWIki 1.9RC1, on Apache/Jetty/HSQLDB. The task monitor 
is showing CPU idle time around 80% but updating of the characters on the 
screen still is taking 10-15 seconds.

Agreed. I think this could be a really important and big set of features and is 
worth doing right. I'm also glad to see other people think it's interesting. 
Note: if we do it right, a number of the standard XWiki pieces can be 
integrated into this (e.g. registering a new Wiki user is a great example of a 
workflow process).
