Subject: Re: to y'all [Yahoo! Clubs: Metric America]

I had to stop as the cheap phone rate had expired.
Now I am on a public computer.

10 cm divided by 4

The 12 inch foot divided by 4

is equally as simple to do.

I know that 10/4 yields a fraction, viz. 2.5.
But why take offence at this simple fraction while ifp is riddled with
fractions like 23/32, 45/64 etc? I loathe such fractions and in practice I
have never needed to divide by 8 and further.

The only thing metric does not do is make units out of binary and other
divisions and this is as it should be. I do not want either ifp or a
Napoleonic monstrosity. But metric measuring equipment enables people to use
divisions as simply as in ifp.
There is a range of material weights like 1/4, 1/2, 1 and 2 kg next to the
strictly decimal sequence. The same can be done with liters. Simple to use
and the subdivisions can be expressed in decimal fractions for calculations:
0.25 and 0.5 kg.
