To all,

I have been going to Ireland since 1971 and I have never encountered the
Irish mile. The Imperial distance signs gave the numbers without the
unit. I think that these were erected during the thirties. Feet-inch signs
often gave numbers like 15-10. I think that Joe is right when he states that
he encountered the Irish mile, but it is strange that it should have been
used
in British Ulster. Belfast is indeed about 100 English miles north of
Dublin.
Maybe it was a very old, forgotten milestone.

Metric signs in Ireland ALWAYS have a unit symbol. Any sign without a symbol
is Imperial. If you see a sign saying something like 'Castlebar 10' that
means Castlebar 10 miles (statute). I have seen a few newer signs, probably
set up by local authorities, without a symbol. These distances are in
English miles.

I hope that the deadline of June next will be met, ending this mess of
Imperial and metric on Irish roads. Local authorities should be banned from
erecting road signs too.

Han
