Just found the following:

The confiscation of a trader's imperial scales in
              Sunderland has led to campaigns to continue
              imperial measures. Should we.....? 

              There were 376 responses as follows: 
              Forget Europe, and stay imperial -- 26% 
              Go metric -- 31% 
              Have both metric and imperial -- 42% 

So much for the 'majority' not wanting metric.
