Fuel consumption per distance traveled is a quick diagnostic for a car's
health. I track it because when it falls I know that something is wrong
with the engine. Of course, I have to track in mpg because the odometer on
my Japanese-made car is calibrated in miles and the gasoline is sold to me
in gallons. Nevertheless, it gives me a number that is useful.

No, I don't talk about how many miles-per-gallon my car gets, so no one is
likely to hear me. However, I don't talk about my blood pressure much
either, and for me the two sets of numbers are analogous in their utility.
