The distinction in UK law is (currently):- criminal law - 1] summary offence magistrates court only (no jury) 2] indictable offence crown court only (jury) 3] triable either way offence (either, currently defendant's choice) Mr Thorburn has committed an offence which is summary only. Civil law (disputes between two people/companies) - county/small calims court
