Country prepares for wind, rain and floods

By Patrick Logue Last updated: 07:20

The country is bracing itself for storm force winds, driving rain and
flooding today as a low pressure front approaches from the Atlantic.

Ireland has escaped the worst of the weather which has caused severe
flooding in Britain over the last week. However, today the midlands, south
and east could experience flooding.

Between one and two inches of rain are predicted for these areas with winds
gusting up to 70 mph. Later today winds will back east to northeast and
winds are expected to reach storm force.

The unsettled weather is expected to continue through tonight and tomorrow
morning.

In Britain thousands of people have already been evacuated from their homes
after a week of flooding. The latest weather system is likely to exacerbate
the worst flooding there in decades. The British Environment Agency has
issued 17 severe flood warnings for Yorkshire and four covering the River
Severn.
