I do not for even one second believe this doom and gloom talk about the U.S. heading into a recession. Clearly, Dubya is right now trying to generate a recession through talking so much about this supposedly inevitable recession, but I believe this is just a political thing. Two reasons: First, Dubya wants to be able to claim that there was a recession during the end of Clinton's regime, so he can be compared favorably. Secondly, Dubya wants to claim some sort of special emergency justification for the tax cuts he hopes to railroad through Congress, and if we can claim we are in a recession, even if temporary, even if bogus, I guess it gives more impetus for the tax cuts, as a way, supposedly, to cure the recession. Nevertheless, I do agree with millitesla that there would be some economic benefit to the U.S. if we were to speed up metrication. I agree that metrication is consistent with increased international trade. Sincerely, Happy New Year! Andy Johnson Jacksonville P.S. Well, surprises, both good and bad, in my 3-hour metrication promotion on the radio today. Surprise #1: as far as I can determine, not one of the call-in comments came from anyone here at metricAmerica or at the usma message board. I am not angry or hurt, but I am perplexed. As far as I can determine, the only real value in this club or the usma board is to share notes as we prepare to go out in the real world to convert more folks to metric. If we are merely some silly little incestuous group uninterested in converting the masses, then how pathetic! Now perhaps many folks in these two groups are busy doing their own thing out there trying to convert people to metric, perhaps. But it does surprise me that not even one person from either group would call me even once during the three hours. And it surprised me that not even one person took advantage of my offer to save the long-distance charge. I had offered to place the calls myself to anyone who by email sent me a phone number and who want to save a few dollars. Now the good surprise is that my local radio audience right here in Jacksonville yielded more pro-metrication calls than anti-metric calls, including some calls which were entertaining and insightful. Happy New Year to all!
