Good point!  My day starts at 00.00 and ends with 23:59.  However, the
first hour of the day runs from 00:00 to 00:59.  The second hour runs from
01:00 to 01:59, and the 24th hour from 23:00 to 23:59.  We speak of the
first hour, the second hour, and so on to the 24th hour.  That is how the
years got numbered, starting with the first year..  Newspaper archives
indicate that the 20th century started on 1901-01-01.  If it ended on
1999-12-31, then the 20th century would have only 99 years.  Note that our
language conventions do not recognize a zero month, nor a zero week, nor a
zero day.
