I see always N.m here. As far as I know the dot is a recognized symbol for
multiplication.

That we have problems too with adopting rational reforms is proven by this
example. Very often the torque of an engine is expressed in N.m but power is
expressed in the so-called metric horsepower (CH, pk, PS, etc).
