1 is the country code for anyone using the NANP. But, as explained below it
includes two pacific islands that joined the NANP.
Country codes +670 and +671 were previously used for the Commonwealth of the
Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI; includes Saipan and Tinian) and Guam, which
have now joined the North American Numbering Plan (country code 1). As of
July 1, 1998, you must use +1 670 for CNMI and +1 671 for Guam. (The new
North American area codes match the previous international country codes.)
Country code +670 has been assigned to East Timor, which has declared
independence from Indonesia after two decades of occupation. However, the
national infrastructure, including telecommunications, has been badly
damaged. At present, telephone calls to the interim government of East Timor
are routed through a switchboard in Darwin, Australia. The implementation
date for +670 for East Timor has not yet been established.
