Subject: Andy did not make the S.O.B. comment! [Yahoo! Clubs: Metric
America]

Toadman is right that Clinton and Gore did just about nothing to advance the
cause of metrication. Although I voted for Gore, I don't want anyone
confused about my personal position here. I am not very happy with the
leadership of either party on metrication... and as far as I can tell, the
Democrats, generally, are only slightly more inclined toward metrication
than the Republicans. However, the one biggest villain was Reagan who
dismantled all the progress which was made under Carter.

Look, folks. We have spent 50 years wandering in the wilderness, hoping that
someday we would get to the promised land. Actually, I think we are there. I
think it is in sight. I think a little bit of enthusiasm, a little bit of
noise, a little bit more commitment, a clear effort to shake off our
discouragement, an acceptance of the fact that the time is here for several
very specific little reasons, and we can make the walls come tumbling down.

*Now the whole world is there except for us.
*Now the clock is ticking until the moment when U.S. products will not be
accepted in Europe unless there is metric only labeling.
*Now we are at the point with all Americans having been exposed at least a
little bit to metric in school.
*Now we are at the point of being suddenly even more interested in worldwide
trade than before.
*Now we have the excuse of the millennim, that it is a milennium thing.
*NAFTA.
*GATT.
*Internet.
*More and more, faster and faster, worldwide communications.
*Daily a few more wobbly steps for some media and by some industries toward
metrication.
*A more certain commitment to metrication by the scientific community than
ever before.

Let's demand a definite U.S. commitment in 2001 to full and total
metrication by some certain date within the next 10 years.
