Sorry, Andy -- I know you didn't make the SOB comment. I replied to the
wrong message.

Regardless of Dems and Repubs, the issue of this forum is how to get the US
into full metrication. By this I mean not just converting conventional US
measurements into their metric equivalent, but using the metric system as
the primary system of weights and measures.

"Converting" conventional measures to metric is not the answer. This just
fosters the "mental mathematics" exercises of converting from one to the
other.

We need to start THINKING in metric.

As an example, a conventional 2x4 piece of lumber (not now actually 2" x 4",
but 1-5/8" x 3-5/8" -- I think) "converted" to metric is about 4.1 cm x 9.2
cm. If we were to think metric, we would make a 4x10, or maybe a 5x10 piece
of wood, which makes a lot more sense.

The problem arises is in the transition period when we would have both "new"
and "old" sizes of everything. It's going to be a problem, but it's one that
we have already partially faced (and solved) and one that we are eventually
going to have to face (like Social Security reform). As an example of where
we have already converted, look at a modern day automobile engine. Virtually
all of the bolts and nuts are metric.

It's here and it won't go away. We need to embrace the metric system so that
we can be in step with the rest of the world.
