I just recently found 2 dual-unit speed limit signs in Jersey City, NJ which look
like as:
+-----+ +-----+
|SPEED| |SPEED|
|LIMIT| |LIMIT|
| 30 | | 35 |
|M.P.H| |M.P.H|
+-----+ +-----+
| 50 | | 55 |
|km/h | |km/h |
+-----+ +-----+
When I approached, I wondered why 30 or 35 on top and 50 or 55 on the bottom
until I got
close to find they were dual-unit speed limit signs. They were very old and had white
background.
Other newer signs were meant to be in mph only.
The 2000 edition of US Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices will become
effective soon.
In lieu of dual-unit speeds, just hope that metrication of traffic control devices
will finalize
someday. A discussion area is available at http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/threads.cfm .
