FW: Error at Italy news site
To all,
I sent them a message too, from a public computer, but I forgot to CC it, so
it has gone. Not only do they use ifp to accomodate only US English speakers
but they also target it *deliberately* at learners of English as a foreign
or second language.
They think that it is logical to express measurements made in metric
countries in ifp when English is used! Thinking of the status English has in
today's world I made a 'proposal' to them to ask the EU to start a 10 or 20
year program to abandon SI and to go ifp. This is logical if we accept their
argument. I vehemently reject it of course. They really deserve the BWMA's
Inch Perfect Award as they support their cause. If I were a BWMA member I
would commend them! And they would surely put this news agency on their
website!
I explained to them that learners of English do not need to be exposed to
non-metric units and asked them again to stop using Imperial and USC
altogether.
They are metric Quislings. I feel betrayed by such people!

Additionally, many readers use the translations to learn one or more of the
languages we use at Italy-news. It seems logical to us to use the
terminology associated with the language in which we are writing in light of
the percentages noted above.

This is the reply I received to my message regarding the incorrect
conversion of 18 deg. C to 34 deg. F. My msg also suggested that it would be
better not to convert at all and avoid the problem of faulty conversions
entirely.

Dear Dr. Hooper:
Thank you for taking the time to write us at Italy-news regarding the error
you spotted in a news item on Tuesday, February 13, 2001, about a medical
operation and, specifically, the temperature of the patient's body during
surgery.
