Han seems to be happy wih the Irish Times temperature reporting. I'm not
sure that I am satisfied with it.
Neither of the two references to temperature (see excerpt below) identify
the value as degrees Celsius. (Is it?) Uncritical or uninformed readers
might interpret those temperatures to be in Fahrenheit.
It is no more correct to say that a temperature is so-many "degrees"
(without specifying Celsius, Fahrenheit or other) than it would be to report
a distance between cities as so-many "distance units" without specifying
whether that means kilometres or miles.
It is sloppy, careless usage to report a measured value without specifying
the unit completely and correctly.

Bill Hooper
