I volunteered to do pro bono work to metricate the web pages of my
area's Chamber of Commerce and also to provide a half day of training
for their research department. I ended up supplying several metricated
pages (leaving non-metric units as is but adding metric information and
providing the coding for that material) to the Chamber as well as
conducting the promised training. I had held off reporting this to the
USMA list, being told periodically by my chamber contacts that follow
through action was imminent and hoping to report resounding success. But
over a year and a half has elapsed since I started and the material I
provided still has not been fully installed. Part way through the
process, they switched companies for the maintenance of their web pages.

Here is one of the more data-laden pages toward which I contributed and
one where at least a portion of my contribution was more-or-less
incorporated. The data is not in the format I provided (which is why it
is terrible) and several weeks ago I (again) provided "cut and paste"
coding to fix the errors. Nonetheless, no corrections have been made.

So, this is as far as they got on this one page. I can claim only
partial success in metricating the Chamber's web pages and have given up
hope of further progress. But we did make some progress; at the outstart
there was absolutely no metric information. Again, here's one exemplar
and you may find a few others by roaming around the site. Beware the
ChamberBiz cookie monster, by the way; it will want to plant several
cookies on your computer.

Perhaps you will be more successful than I was if you likewise volunteer
to metricate your chambers' pages. Or be willing to settle for only
partial success, which is of course better than none. Ironically, due to
the presence of some modern and technical businesses, Charleston is
probably more metric than these pages would lead one to believe.

IF YOU MAKE ANY COMMENTS TO THE CHAMBER (which is NOT the reason for
this message), PLEASE LEAVE MY NAME OUT OF IT AND MAKE NO REFERENCE TO
"A MESSAGE FROM A CHARLESTONIAN"!!!!!

Jim
