The most important thing after all, is that people will like it. Then they will 
continue to use it.
Therefore, make the metric system more human. Use comfortable units and use 
comfortable names at least for everyday use and conversation. SI is for engineers.
Quasi-metric units are not all bad. Let there be for example:
100 m  metric rods
10 m  metric chains
1 dm  metric hands
50 cl  metric pints
And always use cm and cL if mm and mL not for some reason are necessary.
Use it as we use it in Europe.
