John Schweisthal quoted Justin Wastnage as saying:
> In Montral, the street addresses are resolutely metric. Building numbers
> count up from the Saint Lawrence river (so when I lived at 3861 Rue
> University, my front door was 3,861 metres from the river, or nearly 4km).
>
> For east-west streets, it is the distance from Boulevard Saint
> Laurent ("the
> Main"), followed by 'Ouest' or 'Est' depending on the direction. thus 10
> rue Sainte Cathrine O is twenty metres from 10 rue Sainte Cathrine E.
I wonder if Justin has taken actual measurements.
I have some doubt about the street addressing representing meters from a
reference line. When Canada metricated, street addresses didn't change, so I
suspect that Montral's were based on yards (as they are in many North
American cities), not meters.
On the other hand, the Montral city fathers may very well have been
progressive enough to use meters when the street addresses were originally
planned.
Perhaps Joe Reid has some information on this.
