A GUIDE TO CUSTOMARY WEIGHTS AND MEASURES
Compiled and edited by Vivian Linacre, Director, BWMA
Published in May 2001 this guide gives great insight into the origins and uses
of our customary weights and measures. It contains articles, tables and notes
to define, explain and comment upon the modern uses and relationships - as well
as the global origins, evolution and culture - of what became known as the
Imperial System, but has since become the universal Anglo-American system of
customary measures.
This book is a must for the home, for schools, anf particurly for trade,
industry and government!
It is dedicated, among others, to Leo Blair (whose initials spell lb) and whose
weight was announced in Parliament as "6lb 12oz".
In addition to an anthology of measures the book covers such subjects as
Standard linear Measures, Nautical measures, Light measures, Measures deriving
from the human body, fluid measures, volume and cubic capacity, paper sizes,
music, sound, temperature, work and energy and many more.
Seven appendices deal with such matters as foreign units corresponding to the
foot and mile, quotations from Shakespeare, The Gallon, The King's Girth and
the Rules of Lawn Tennis.
