As he lumped the U.S., western Canada and New Zealand into the same
statement, it's possible the tons per acre measure doesn't apply to all of
them (i.e., that he was being a little vague). I suggest you get him to
clarify that.
In the meantime, I've just looked at a number of New Zealand agricultural
web sites. Lots of hectares there and absolutely no acres. I think it highly
likely that they measure their areal yields in metric tons (tonnes) per
hectare.
