I am not Andy, but I know Andy. I admire his work on a
variety of issues. Mr. Elwell, I think you understand
plainly that Andy has left in frustration that this
group has indicated a much keener desire for civility
than for actually doing something.
I am angry that Jim Elwell responds to my legitimate
concerns with nothing but insults and sarcasm, totally
nonresponsive to what I said.
Mr. Elwell, what action if any do you believe the
government ought to take on the subject of
metrication?
And did you say that you believe there is a takings
issue involved in metrication?
How could this be? There is no takings issue when
government changes the speed limit, although some auto
manufacturers benefit and some lose. There is no
takings issue involved when in Florida the state
government mandates not-metric beer containers then
comes back years later to allow metric beer
containers.
To invent these theories, untrue theories, totally
untrue theories, first, that the Constitution does not
allow for Congress to mandate metrication, then, that
the Constitution would cause metrication to be called
a takings issue, these are not just legitimate
alternative points of view.
These two items are wrong, legally, constitutionally.
And if either were true, there would be no point for
this group to exist, because there would never be
metrication.
I am surprised that others don't see how much damage
you do to the cause.
If one of us succeeds in persuading some group like
Rotary to take on metrication as its national project
of the year, where would we send them? Clearly, this
group would not be a good idea, because this group
features advocates like Jim Elwell who without much
objection ridicules the whole point of government
action.
I want to do something useful for metrication, but,
seriously, usma members, if we were to find one big
national group, like Rotary, what in heck would we do
with them? We need to identify some pro-metric group
which has clear goals. Andy and I have discovered that
this group is not a group with clear goals. Actually
here we have a group which ridicules folks for
desiring clear goals.
