Alas, you are right - same story as with letter stamps !

But we are said that this is only temporary : in a near future, we 
are supposed to have cheques valid anywhere in the Euroland. Even if 
emmitted by a French bank, certainly the worst !

Now, the most elegant way to get rid of that is to use credit cards : 
usable anywhere, with no cost within the Euroland.
