The message you last responded to was meant to be forwarded to the USMA
(United States Metric Association) user list, but somehow it went back to
you. The original inquiry to you was prompted by the message I received
from the person (shown copied below the text of this message) below after
visiting his website and reading that 35 mm film is really 34.8 mm because
that is some sort of exact conversion of 1-3/8 inches. Actually, depending
on rounding, the conversion of 1-3/8 inches can be anywhere from 34.8 mm to
35.0 mm.

As you see in his response, unless he hears something from an official
source, that film made today is exactly 35 mm and not 34 point whatever, he
will not change the information on his website. Since Fuji is a world wide
leader in the making of film, what better "official source" can there be?

I no longer have the link to his website, but if I should come across it, I
will send it to you. His e-mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you for responding, I look forward to your response to this message.

Thanks,

John

Subject: Re: Edison Film

The info comes from the guy who invented "35mm" film -- W.K. Laurie
Dickson. He was the guy who Edison hired to make the first movie camera by
the Edison "works". In his article "A Brief History of the Kinetograph,
The Kinetoscope and the Kineto-phonograph" in the Journal of the S.M.P.E
(Dec 1933), he wrote that he ordered the film to be 1 3/8. No one in the US
in 1888 used the metric system. He even says in the article, that the film
we use today (1933) is 1 3/8, not 35mm. Perhaps you need to get a copy of
the article.

When I measure "35mm" film (and I have about 25 types on hand) they are
always less than 35mm, but always exactly 1 3/8. My conversion is off by
0.1 mm, but this still does not make "35 mm" film into 35 mm -- it's still
only around 34.9mm. Unless you have an official source or article
specifying that the film was changed to 35 mm at some point, I'm leaving it
as "35 mm".

Joe

Dear Mr. John P. Schweisthal:

Thank you for your reply to our e-mail. Please allow us to assist you
further.

Unfortunately, we do not have a record as to who may have informed you that
35mm film is 34.8mm wide. You original e-mail (attached) did not contain any
e-mail or website addresses.

Thank you for your interest in Fujifilm products.

Another note. I want to send this reply to the guy who insisted the film is
not 35 mm but 34.8 mm as proof the film is a true 35 mm. But, I deleted the
e-mails containing his web-site and e-mail address. Can someone who
archived the information please resend it to me.

Dear Mr. John P. Schweisthal:

Thank you for contacting Fujifilm. We are extremely sorry for the lengthy
delay in our reply to your e-mail, which was due to very high e-mail volume.
Please allow us to assist you.

Please be advised that 35mm film is indeed 35mm wide. However, the image
area of the film is 24mm wide.

If you should have any further questions, please contact our Sensitized
Products Technical Hotline at 1-800-788-3854, option #73. Thank you for your
interest in Fujifilm products.
