There's a company that builds homes in the Ottawa
area named Metric Construction.

from the All_Aboard list
Anyone heard of this
country, Metric Construction?
Carleton
First writer, Chicago:
I think 25 meters is about 82ft + change. US [railroad
passenger] cars are 85ft +/- an inches or so. Your [sic] almost a meter
short. (Is the meter gas, water or electric?)
Response from another, Toronto:
There's a project on in my neighborhood to replace all gas
meters, putting the new ones outdoors, and replacing all the gas
mains at the same time. This involves much noise, much digging-up
of gardens and chopping of sidewalks, and many cryptic marks on
sidewalks and roadways and the sides of houses.
Yesterday I noticed
that someone had marked off an irregular set of measurements in front of
my house. My front walk is just short of 11m. Following the
trail to the north, I see 8m 7m 6m 5m 4m but nothing less. The
zero point isn't marked; I think it is just north of my neighbor's front
walk, but I'm not sure, and I don't think that's anywhere near where
her present gas line branches off.
But I am sure of the unit of
measure. This is Canada, after all; and although I am still a
bit schizophrenic of measure, I know a meter when I see it; and most
important of all, the contractor doing the work for the gas utility is
named Metric
Construction.
