From today's Evening Standard:

Trader loses metric appeal

    by Martin McGlown

A market grocer today lost his bid to use the Human Rights
Act to overturn a ban on him selling goods in only pounds
    and ounces.

Stallholder Peter Collins, nicknamed a "metric martyr", put
his livelihood on the line to fight European weights and
measures rules. He claimed the overwhelming majority of
his customers in Sutton were confused by the metric
    system.

Sutton borough council had revoked his trading licence for
failure to comply with Brussels' legislation. Today the 51 -
year- old ' s civil appeal was thrown out by Sutton
    magistrates.

Mr Collins, who immediately signalled his intention to lodge
a further appeal, vowed to return to his stall on Monday and
    continue selling in imperial measures.
