Carleton brings up a valid point.  But, a closer look shows how really stupid the government workers really are.  Or maybe they aren't interested in the welfare of the country, just how many teenage interns they can get into bed.

Using Carleton's logic about the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, they could still keep up their present production of bills and keep all the jobs.  But, instead of printing one dollar bills, they can print two dollar bills at the same rate.

Very few people want a pocket full of dollar coins.  And it need not be.  Change can be given out in dollar coins and two dollar bills.  Change for a five can be any combination of twos and dollar coins.  Giving two two's and a dollar coin would result in the least amount of heavy coinage.

At this point in time, I would not push for a two dollar coin.  That for sure would bomb.

But, the public isn't that much brighter.  I've seen people wrestle and swear at machines that won't take their disgusting, wrinkled old dollars, and when offered a coin refused it.  When shown how easy the dollar coin works, was not enough to convince people who use the vending machines at work to keep a few coins on hand for that very purpose.  You might get labeled as weird or un-American or something if you are seen using the coin.  No one else is doing it, so why should I, must be the thinking.  The same with metric.

If the Bureau is replacing the dollar bills with dollar bills on a one to one basis and any excess demand is made with the coin, it is hard to see this.  I have yet to see a new dollar bill, ever.  Everyone I get or have seen in cash drawers, or passed by others in transactions is in deplorable condition.  I wonder if they are making any dollar bills at all.

This country seems to think it is cute to do things in an illogical manner. Find out what is the most economical and efficient method and then do the exact opposite, and then try and force the world to do the same.

I just wonder how much more abuse of this kind this country will be able to handle before there is a major collapse.

A few years ago the Bank of Canada, in the interest of economy, introduced
one- dollar and two-dollar coins.  One-dollar and two-dollar notes were
completely withdrawn from circulation in a few months.  The economy results
from the fact that coins have a much, much longer life than bills.  There
was no public consultation, and so far as I am aware, there was no public
protest.

And there would be little here, too, if the Government did it right.

But note that the Bank of Canada controls both the coins and the paper money.

Here there are two agencies, in one of them (Bureau of Engraving and
Printing) the dollar bill is half their work.  Work = jobs = workers writing
to their Congresspeople saying don't cut their jobs.

But the US Government doesn't have the guts to phase out the $1 bill any more
than it has the guts to finish metrication.  It's the same root cause, and
it's why the dollar coin is relevant here.
