My son is going into 3rd Grade in New York, not sure what he will learn this year but 
in 2nd Grade they learned quite a bit about metric measurements. Matter of fact, it 
was introduced before English units. 

They can teach it and the kids can learn it but unfortunately they can't force them to 
use it in our society. Too bad we can't use a communist philosophy and brain wash them 
to think that metric is good, English is bad bad bad.

My nephew, age 7,  will be starting 2nd grade in the suburbs of 
Chicago.  On his list of necessary school supplies was
the following item:

12 inch ruler (Ruler MUST also have metric markings.)

Looks like they're trying to introduce it early.
