I have no firm answer to these questions. I think, from what I have read,
that the American network (was it NBC or ABC?) had exclusive rights in the
US, but not the rest of the world, in Atlanta. I find it hard to believe
that such a lousy network would have been allowed to determine the content
that the rest of the world would be able to view; after all, people are
really interested in soccer in Europe, but not very much here. They didn't
even televise the 10000 m race here, but I am sure it was shown in Europe.
As to the second Q, obviously the IOC hasn't prevented the US networks from
using wombat here in America. I doubt that the IOC cares as long as they
get their money.
Maybe, if I can find the time, I'll write a real letter to someone at the
network who may have some real say on these things, stressing that I am a
real hot-shot xc skier (yeah, right....) that speaks for zillions of avid
xc ski fans here in dry California who won't stand for anymore of this
non-metric stuff....
