2001-08-22 It seems this Italian news media used the wrong term when describing the length of the course. By using the term miles, instead of nautical miles, persons reading the English text only would automatically assume the miles are the same as used on land even though it is a description of a nautical event. I just wonder how many services would report this as 96.5 km instead of the correct 111 km shown. Also, the Italian news service is very sloppy in the use of metric units. Sometimes, even within the same article there will be a mix of English and metric. Sometimes one article is fully metric and another fully FFU. Makes one wonder if the conversion of units depends on the translator. One translator might keep the units intact and another will go out of his/her way to convert to FFU. And it is remarkable, that with only 4 months to go, they are still quoting prices in lire and not Euros. I wonder if they will continue to use lire long after they have vanished.
