What's wrong with the phrases like "one tenth as big" (instead of the
disputed "ten times smaller"? And for factors more complicated then 10, say
365, why not say "smaller by a factor of 365"? (Although "one three hundred
sixty fifth as big" is not too hard to write, especially if one uses
numerals: "1/365th as big".)
The fact that there are quite reasonable alternatives to the confusing
phrase "365 times smaller" I would steadfastly refuse to use that phrase and
encourage others to do likewise.
