Not all countries will have their national currencies in co-existence with
the Euro for the full 2 months.

The national currencies will be allowed until 2002-03-01 in the following
countries:

Belgien, Deutschland, Finnland, Irland, Italien, Luxenburg, Österreich,
Portugal and Spanien.

In Niederlande the Gulden will be valid until 2002-01-29, in Frankreich
(inclusive territories and overseas departments) the Franc will be valid
until 2002-02-18, and in Griechenland until 2002-02-10.

I don't know what schedule is in effect for countries outside the Euro-zone
who will also convert to the Euro in January. These countries include
Mazedonien, Kosovo, Bosien, Montenego, Andorra, Monaco, San Mario and
Vatikan Stadt.

As for confusion, that is hard to say. I heard that the EU banks plan to
have most of the old currency exchanged into the new within the first 2
weeks of January. And even if some customers spend old currency in stores,
the stores will return Euros as change.

Some countries will allow the old currency to be valid forever, others will
have a 1 year to 10 for coins or no limit and 10 to 30 for paper or no
limit. But, these can only be exchanged at banks and not spent in the
market place after the cut-off dates.

The confusion might occur with foreigners who are holding EU currencies and
not knowing how to exchange them.
