The Progresive Conservative government elected in the summer of 1984 showed
no desire to completre Canada's metrication. The Liberal government that
came to power in 1993 apparently thinks that pushing on with metrication
would lose it more votes than it would gain. Pierre Elliott Trudeau is
dead.

In a letter dated July 27 Alan Johnson, President of Measurement Canada,
wrote: "a moratorium on the enforcement of sections 338, 339 and 340 of the

Weights and Measures Regulations has been in effect since 1983.

"The poiicy of the Government of Canada has been to let the marketplace set
the pace of conversion to metric units rather than force its use by
regulation. The majority of Canadians appear to be satisfied with this
arrangement."
